THE SAFARI LODGE
Listen to the heartbeat and hear the rhythms of Africa at The Safari Lodge in the breathtaking Eastern Cape wilderness. The Safari Lodge is tucked away in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of the 7000 hectare Amakhala Game Reserve. Nestled between Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park, its location is ideal for the best wildlife viewing South Africa has to offer. The Safari Lodge offers a three day package which, along with activities on Amakhala, includes a game drive into Addo and a visit to The Born Free Foundation.

The landscape and elements of African tribal design influenced owners and artists, Mike and Justine Weeks, in their endeavour to achieve a holistic safari experience. This intimate thatched lodge with its unique air-conditioned safari huts offers all the comforts of a luxury five star lodge and is an undisturbed retreat where you can regenerate your soul and tune into the sounds of nature.

The Safari Lodge sleeps 22 people. In addition to the four original safari huts there are 7 new luxury suites complete with private plunge pools and separate lounge areas.

Canvas drop blinds open up the safari huts and the central lounge to views of a small waterhole where monkeys come to play and antelope and zebra to quench their thirst.

You can soak away the heat in a luxurious double bath with the sights and sounds of nature or splash off the dust in a double outdoor shower. Large beds draped with mosquito nets, sparkling wine on ice alongside a double bath filled with aromatherapy scented bubbles make this a favorite for honeymooners and the romantic at heart.

In the evening the haunting sound of the kudu horn will summon you to the fireside, to share tales of your day’s adventure and to enjoy award winning South African wines and local cuisine under a magnificent canopy of stars. Our resident chef will treat you with gastronomic delights presented with African flair to end off the perfect day.

The Safari Lodge’s warm and hospitable environment and the personal touch from friendly well-trained staff will create unforgettable memories.

WOODBURY LODGE
Woodbury Lodge, situated on the beautiful Amakhala Game Reserve only some 75km from Port Elizabeth, is spectacularly set against a cliff above the Bushman’s River valley. It offers an intimate and tranquil experience of the Eastern Cape riverine bushveld at its best. The lodge has recently received a four star grading in recognition of its standards.

Your hosts, the Gush family, will endeavour to make your stay truly memorable.

Bush Living
Guests are accommodated in five comfortably appointed stone-and-thatch sleeping lodges, each with air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom. The seclusion of the lodges and the design of the bathrooms and individual outdoor relaxation areas enable our visitors to enjoy the unique and breathtaking views at their leisure. Guests are often thrilled by the late afternoon sighting of the elephant herd passing by.

Relaxation
Meals with a South African flavour are served in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere in the central dining room, and guests can gather around the outdoor fire or in the attractive bar lounge for a drink and snacks before dinner. Breakfasts on occasion are served outdoors on the deck of the dining room. A range of game viewing and other activities such as the river cruise and canoeing are on offer, or you could just recline around the pool and enjoy some sun while the birds keep you company.

REED VALLEY INN
A RICH FAMILY HISTORY
Reed Valley has been in the Weeks family for over one hundred years. It was purchased in 1898 by Jabez Weeks, son of an 1820 Settler. The previous owners were of Dutch descent. The main house is estimated to have been built in 1806. Through time, many farming enterprises such as cows, sheep, ostriches, crocodiles, pineapples and dairy have had their successes and failures.

Rod and Tracey Weeks are now the fifth generation on Reed Valley which is part of the Amakhala Game Reserve. Our forefathers spent their time hunting leopard, lions and elephant to enable them to farm in peace and now we have re-introduced them in a unique joint conservation project with five neighbouring family farms.

Accommodation
Reed Valley Inn is nestled in a farmyard and is comprised of four historic en-suite country rooms, which once provided rest and safety for the travellers on the mail wagon. Each room has a separate entrance on to a private patio. Children of all ages are welcome.

A sumptuous dinner featuring local specialties will be served with true Eastern Cape hospitality. In the morning, enjoy a hearty breakfast before you set off to discover the untold beauty of our land.

Your stay will be made special by personalised attention and arrangements that are tailor-made to suit your requirements from catering to excursions and activities.

We offer rooms that are serviced daily, a swimming pool, and classic pub.

REED VALLEY BUSH LODGE
An African Retreat
Reed Valley is proud to announce a brand new African retreat on the Amakhala Game Reserve.

Built in the bush at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, each of the four rooms overlook a watering point with big sky views. All buildings are thatched roofs, tented walls and wooden floors.

Each room has an open deck with plunge pool, air conditioning (hot & cold), fire place, large oval bath and outdoor shower.

The main building has a large, comfortable lounge, dining area, pub and a 96m2 deck with outdoor and indoor fire place.

The guest reception is at Reed Valley Inn where guests are welcomed and checked in. From there guests are transported in an open game viewer by our experienced ranger, out to the Bush Lodge which is approximately a 15 minute drive.

Reed Valley Bush Lodge will strive to give every guest a fantastic, friendly and exciting stay, synonymous with the Amakhala Heritage Collection standards.

CARNARVON DALE
Situated in Frontier Country, Carnarvon Dale is an 1857 family farm on the banks of the Bushman’s River. This historic Settler farmhouse once provided lodgings for travelers, whose journeys had been halted by the flooded river, until it was safe for them to cross. In this same tradition of hospitality, we welcome you into our home and invite you to share our heritage.

Once too, travelers recorded that our open plains were home to the mighty elephant and fearsome lion and that the valley bushveld teemed with game of many species. As you return to nature, so nature will return to you all that is good. We invite you to share in our conservation experience.

Accommodation
Carnarvon Dale consists of the Settler farmhouse, the Bottom House, and an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage, the Top House. On offer is a choice of en-suite serviced bedrooms with private lounges meeting three star grading requirements. A family suite is available on request.

Delicious farm-style meals are served in the main dining room. Morning and late afternoon guided game drives in an open Land Rover are arranged to suit your personal needs. For a change of pace enjoy our bird watching and game spotting walks along the lazy Bushman’s River. And for those really hot days, there's an inviting swimming pool to cool off in.

In the evenings there are new friends to be made over cool sundowners and stories of bygone days to entertain you around a “braaivleis” fire under South African stars.

Your hosts at Carnarvon Dale, Roger and Maryan Hart, will make your stay a memorable and enjoyable one. Let them introduce you to the rich heritage of this unique landscape and its history while you enjoy the warm hospitality that defines the Eastern Cape.

LEEUWENBOSCH
THE COUNTRY HOUSE
A FAMILY RICH IN HISTORY
William Fowlds of Long Lee was born in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1838. At 14 years he was apprenticed to a wheelwright to learn the trade. He married Sarah Green at an early age and then set off across the sea to a distant land, South Africa and landed in Algoa Bay in 1857. After a tedious journey by ox wagon in unfamiliar surroundings of wild animals, he arrived at Addo where he very soon found employment with a wagon builder.

William had five sons and two daughters, the eldest of which, also William, bought the farm Leeuwenbosch in 1873. Thereafter it passed on to his only son, Victor, and in time to his son, William Henry, commonly known as Bill.

Bill and his wife Rose have been hosting guests since 1992 and their special brand of hospitality draws guests back year after year to Leeuwenbosch. The return to the family home in 1999 by William and Heidi and their children represents the fifth generation of the Fowlds family on Leeuwenbosch. It continues to be a privilege to share our family’s heritage with you.

The Country House
This historical colonial manor house built in 1908 offers true country living in every sense. Both spacious and comfortable, with five en-suite bedrooms which include two suites, one family room, one double room and one twin the Country House is set amid beautiful indigenous gardens and is an ideal base for game viewing and relaxation.

The Country House on Leeuwenbosch caters for the whole family. We offer two family suites,

SHEARER'S LODGE
In 1926 the Fowlds family began wool farming on Leeuwenbosch farm. In 1930 the building which is today Shearers’ Lodge was erected as a dedicated sheep shearing shed. Sheep farming continued until 1996 when the farm was converted to a game reserve. The old shed, in which close on a million merino sheep were shorn, has been beautifully converted into four luxury en-suite rooms, three twins and one really special honeymoon suite and surrounded by indigenous gardens.

Both the Country House and Shearers’ Lodge have been graded to four star standards.

The old stables on Leeuwenbosch were converted into an intimate and quaint family chapel and together with the Country House and Shearers’ Lodge make an ideal wedding venue.
